So, Death Hunh?

Is it really the end?

Is that why we fear death?

Death has been called the ultimate enemy of man. It is a real enemy, and evidence of this enemies powers are all around us. Some estimates place human death tallies at 59 million people every year. That works out to about two deaths every second. Would you like the numbers by type?

  1. every 102 seconds one person dies as a casualty of war
  2. every 61 seconds one person is murdered
  3. every 39 seconds one person commits suicide
  4. every 26 seconds one person dies in a traffic accident
  5. every 3 seconds one person dies of hunger related causes
  6. every 3 seconds one person under the age of five dies

You would think that with such a prevalance of occurances we would become callus and used to death. And, to some extent we do. At least we do as long as it is someone we don’t know who is expiring.

In fact, death has great entertainment value as long as it isn’t connected to anyone we know. Just consider the latest action movie, or even television news. Many of us are enthralled by the concept.

The rest of us are completely terrified by the idea of death. In fact, counselors propose the fear phenomena is so powerful that it interferes with the ability of us to carry on with our daily lives. The fear is so prevalent it has been divided into three classification of “death anxiety.”  The first is the fear of pain that may accompany death. The second fear held by many is of the unknown aspect of death (cholerics beware). The third facet is the fear of losing a loved one from death. Finally, there is the fear of the negative concepts one’s death (I hate using words like “one’s” but there doesn’t seem to be a help for it here) might have on others.

I have my own personal fears related to the big “D” and I’m sure you have your own. I plan to devote the next few posts to exploring the concept of the fear of death.

My coping skill is obviously, to become a little irreverent toward the topic. How do you address the issue?
